Campus & Classroom Diversity
Porter Elementary has a very diverse student population.
Our student population is made up of:
- 11.8% are African American
- 62.3% are Hispanic
- 20.4% are Caucasian
- 0.5% are American Indian
- 3.8% are Asian
- 1.2% are two or more races
Of our student population:
- 66.4% are Economically Disadvantaged
- 51.9% are English Language Learners
- 10.1% are Special Education
In my classroom, my the demographics of my students are very diverse as well.
I have 22 students and of those, 4 are African American, 9 are Hispanic, 6 are Caucasian, and 3 are Asian. I have 11 boys and 11 girls. I have 7 students in the ESL program, 1 in Speech, and 3 in the MTA program for dyslexia. The majority of my students are working at or above grade level and I have 4 who are working slightly below grade level.
The biggest challenge I face with the diversity of my classroom is ensuring that each student's needs are being met academically. Differentiated instruction is a huge challenge because there are so many different needs that need to be met depending on learning styles, reading levels, writing ability, math skills, comprehension level, and vocabulary knowledge. I try to apply differentiated instruction mostly through small group instruction depending on the subject.
